Several months ago, I listened to a podcast with Gary Breka and Dr. Paul Barattiero.
The episode was called “Best Water to Drink?” and it was all about the impact of hydrogen water on your gut and brain.

Water is just a fascinating subject.
I’ve been filtering my drinking water for years and recently added a cotton filter to my shower head, but this podcast completely opened my eyes to the health benefits of hydrogen water (which I still barely understand).
I immediately started researching hydrogen water bottles online and looking at different brands.
That’s when I started seeing ads everywhere for the EVOLV hydrogen bottle.
It was certified and high-quality … but not cheap.
Still, I was curious to see what the hype was all about, so I bought one! 🛒😍
As of right now, December 2024, I’ve been using my hydrogen water bottle for about two months so I’m ready to share my thoughts and experience.
How does it work?
If you want to know the exact science behind hydrogen water, I suggest listening to the podcast with Dr. Paul Barattiero or watching the 2-minute video below.
The best way I can explain it ... is that hydrogen gas is essential to a healthy body.
Our bodies use hydrogen gas to perform many functions, which is why our intestines produce hydrogen gas naturally as part of the digestive system.
But what if a person doesn’t make enough hydrogen gas on their own?
A hydrogen water bottle is designed to add hydrogen gas to your water, so you can get more hydrogen into your body quickly and easily.
Basically, it’s like a supplement that can only be taken in gas form.
What does hydrogen do for your health?
“Molecular hydrogen exerts biological effects on nearly all organs. It has anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging effects and contributes to the regulation of autophagy and cell death.” - National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM)
As I mentioned earlier, our bodies need hydrogen to complete many important functions in the brain, heart, lungs, liver, and pancreas.
For example; recent studies have shown that hydrogen can protect the lungs against various diseases including asthma, lung cancer, and pulmonary fibrosis.
Here are some of the main ways your body uses hydrogen:
Anti-oxidation — Through its antioxidant effects, molecular hydrogen protects cells from lipid and fatty acid peroxidation.
Anti-inflammatory — A study done on mice in 2001 proved that hydrogen gas inhibits pro-inflammatory factors and promotes healing at lesion sites.
Autophagy — If you’re into fasting, you know all about this. Autography is the stage where your body repairs cells and hydrogen plays a major role in both the regulation and promotion of autography.
Aging — Research has shown that molecular hydrogen contributes to the suppression of aging by reducing oxidative DNA damage and maintaining genomic stability.
As you can see, hydrogen has many jobs to do.
By drinking hydrogen-rich water every day, you can give your body the extra boost of hydrogen it needs to perform these tasks better.
Do you feel a difference after using it?
Most people say they feel 10% better after using it.
I’ve felt about 20% better but I’ve also been experimenting with different ways to drink my water throughout the day.
Lately, I’ve been drinking a large amount of water (at least 3-4 bottles) in the first hour after waking up.
I need to write another blog post with more details about this experiment, but since I’ve begun drinking plenty of hydrogen water in the morning, I feel at least a 10-20% increase in my overall energy levels.
How do you know if you actually felt a difference (not just a placebo effect)?
I used two different methods to test my energy levels.
The first method was a simple journal that I wrote every day, recording my morning and evening energy levels with a score of 1-10.
I did this for a week before using the bottle to get my baseline energy score, which was 6.5/10.
Then, after a week of using the hydrogen water bottle and recording my daily score, my overall energy score increased to 7.5/10 and remained at this score for several weeks.
With the early hydration plan that I mentioned above, I’ve been able to consistently increase my daily energy levels to 8/10 which is where I’m currently at.
The second method I used to test if I felt a difference from the hydrogen water was my daily workout routine.
Normally, I start my day with a walk and run on the beach (4 km each way), followed by a stair climb (to my room on the 24th floor) and then a 20-minute metabolic workout with light weights.
The first workout (24 hours after drinking from my new hydrogen bottle) was no different. I completed my morning routine as usual.
The second workout (48 hours later) was different. I completed the run approx. 5 minutes faster than usual and climbed to the 26th floor before realizing I had gone too far … and walked back down to the 24th … something which had never happened before.
I was impressed at how I was able to accomplish the same tasks as before but with slightly less physical fatigue.
This is all anecdotal evidence, but there are plenty of studies that show the health benefits of molecular hydrogen and I’ve seen a lot of them in the process of writing this blog post. 😂 I’m currently reading this one on the effectiveness of hydrogen-rich water as a therapeutic and preventive strategy for metabolic syndrome.
How often do you use the bottle?
I drink at least 50% of my daily water through the hydrogen bottle.
I’ve found that when I try to use the bottle 100% of the time, I end up drinking less water daily than I normally would because the bottle is small and takes 5 minutes to process every time.
Also, I never travel anywhere without my water bottle (hydrogen or not) and I always try to drink more water than usual on days when I’m extra busy. I think both the brain and body need that extra hydration on tough days.
Is it worth the money?
For me, yes.
I’m a huge believer in the health benefits of good hydration.
And having hydrogen-rich water everyday makes me feel like I’m giving my body the best water possible.
“Water is life.”
My good friend, Ash, would say this to me and it’s become my motto.
Honestly, I could talk for days about water… 😂
Would you recommend the EVOLV bottle or a different one?
Before I purchased the EVOLV bottle, I bought a generic brand online and it was much cheaper … but I didn’t feel any difference with it.
With the EVOLV bottle, I felt the difference in my energy levels within 48 hours so I would recommend it based on that, but there are more affordable brands that do the same thing.
Reminder: I’m not affiliated with any of these brands and don’t receive any financial reward if you purchase or not.
